Mock Test Registration is Open
The Academic Boosters are offering mock college tests one more time this year: the mock SAT on Feb. 25 and the mock ACT on Mar. 17. The Mock SAT will be held in the LHMS cafeteria, starting at 8:45 a.m., and the mock ACT will be held in SLHS classrooms, also starting at 8:45 a.m. Feedback for the SAT will be on Feb. 28, while the ACT feedback will be on Mar. 27. Both feedback sessions will be in the SLHS Lecture Hall.
We’ve timed these mocks so they can be used for short-term benefits--there is an official SAT on Mar. 10 and an ACT on April 14--or you can use them as a longer-term study guide: where can your student spend the least amount of time to get the highest rate of return? The mocks are a great opportunity to practice test-taking under official conditions without worrying about getting an official score. Instead, Appelrouth Tutoring will score the tests and create a detailed feedback report for each student. See the bottom of the Academic Boosters page for sample reports and a test FAQ.
The registration cost for each mock test is $12 if paid online and $15 for paper registrations. Walk-ins will be accepted on a space available basis for $15.
Welcome from your PTSA
Parents and students as we begin the academic year, I would like to welcome you and encourage you to become a PTSA member to help us to meet our GOALS:
- Facilitating communication with our SLHS families; through our SLHS/PTSA newsletter, weekly Keep In Touch messages, PTSA website, SLHS student directory, and Frequently Asked Questions booklet
- Providing recognition for students and staff; with honor roll breakfasts, Bringing Up Grades recognitions, Academic Letter Ceremony, scholarships at our Senior Award Ceremony, Reflections Program, VA PTA Citizenship Essay Program, Welcome Back Teacher Breakfast and Teacher Appreciation Luncheon
- Disseminating information through; presentations, speakers and discussions at PTSA meetings and assisting with: college application workshops, Postsecondary Options Day involvement, and the classroom support program
Membership is our primary funding for these important PTSA sponsored activities. Please help support these programs by joining. This year, membership dues are discounted online, and all members receive a discount on their directory purchases. Take care of both using PayPal on our Join or Donate page. Quick and easy, plus savings for you!
Volunteers help make these goals a reality. Indicate your interest using our online Volunteer Signup. This does not obligate you, but will put you on a contact list for event and project chairs to contact when they need help. If you are unable to volunteer, consider making a monetary donation to SLHS PTSA; no donation is too small.
PTSA meetings are open to everyone and provide a great opportunity to learn more about our school, hear from departmental chairs, receive updates on PTSA activities, and learn about “this month at SLHS” though Mr. Butler’s pictorial power point summary (not to be missed). Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm in the Media Center.
Looking forward to an exciting 2011-2012,
Susan Sather
SLHS PTSA President
